The grandfather still had the whistle.
Orange.
Cheap.
Daniel’s.
When I showed him our driveway photograph, he pointed immediately.
“That’s them.”
My knees nearly gave out.
He told us only what he remembered.

His boat overturned when a storm rolled in faster than the forecast had predicted.
His grandson, Ben, was struggling to keep his head above water.
Then Daniel’s boat appeared.
The boys threw flotation gear.
One of them kept screaming instructions.
“Both arms! Put both arms through!”
I covered my mouth.
Sophie grabbed my hand.
I knew that voice without hearing it.
“Both arms! Put both arms through!”
My middle son used to bark the exact same words when helping his sisters into backpacks.
“Both arms.”
The grandfather smiled sadly.
“That kid wouldn’t stop yelling until Ben had it on right.”
Another boat eventually reached them.
Daniel waited until help was close.
Then turned toward shore as the weather worsened.
