My heart nearly stopped.
I stood outside the kitchen, one hand resting on my swollen belly, struggling to believe what I had just heard.
Martha continued speaking.
“Jack, you promised your father you would do this. Those children belong to our family. We cannot allow that woman to take them away from us.”
Jack sighed.
“Don’t worry, Mom. Once she gives birth, everything will be taken care of.”
My knees almost gave way.
“What do you mean, everything will be taken care of?” Martha asked.
Jack lowered his voice.
“Her father is a very wealthy man. You know that. She left everything behind when she married me. But her father has been trying to contact her for months. If we can get the babies registered under our family name and convince her to leave, we will have everything we need.”
Martha chuckled.
“And what about Emily?”
There was a long silence.
