“For Years, My Son and Daughter-in-Law Barely Spoke to Me. But Suddenly, They Became Loving and Caring, Even Insisting on Moving Into My House. I Was Happy, but Their Sudden Change Made Me Suspicious. Then One Morning, I Saw My Daughter-in-Law Putting Something Into My Glass of Water. I Pretended Not to Notice and Took the Glass to a Laboratory. When the Results Came Back, the Doctor Looked at Me With a Terrified Expression and Said, ‘Ma’am, You Need to Hear This…’ What He Told Me Made My Blood Run Cold…”

“I’m not saying that. But nobody should be adding substances to your drinks without your knowledge. You need to speak with your regular doctor and find out exactly what’s been happening.”

I could barely hear his final words.

For three months, my son and daughter-in-law had controlled nearly everything in my house.

My meals. My bills. My shopping.

And now my drinking water.

On the way home, one terrible thought kept repeating in my head.

Were they trying to make me too weak to live alone?

When I entered the house, Daniel was in the kitchen, speaking quietly on his phone.

“I understand,” he whispered. “Please give me another week. I’ll find the money.”

He hung up when he noticed me.

“Mom! Where have you been?”

“Call Rebecca,” I answered. “We need to talk.”

Ten minutes later, I placed the laboratory report on the kitchen table.

Rebecca read it, and all the color drained from her face.
