The first night after the funeral, Brandon opened his laptop at the dining table Nicholas and I had owned for decades.
“We should talk about next steps.”
Those words told me almost everything.
Neither child asked whether I was sleeping or how I planned to survive the silence of the house after forty years of marriage. Instead, they spoke about what was “practical” and “manageable,” explaining that maintaining the farmhouse and orchard would eventually become too much for me.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Brandon smiled patiently.
“Just come look at the place, Mom. It’ll be easier if we handle this calmly.”
The following morning, they handed me a suitcase and drove me away from my own home. I agreed to go because something inside me needed to know exactly how far my children were willing to take whatever plan they had made.
They never took me to a retirement community.
