Brandon insisted that abandoning me on the road had been a terrible decision made under pressure. Melissa admitted that she had known the plan was wrong but had remained silent because she was frightened of her own financial problems and desperate for the developer’s money.
“We thought once everything was settled, you’d understand.”
I looked at her.
“You thought I would understand being removed from my home so you could sell it?”
She lowered her eyes.
“When you say it like that…”
“There is no other way to say it.”
I did not cut Brandon and Melissa out of my life forever, but I also did not return their access to the business or give them any authority over the land. Trust was not something they could recover simply because they apologized once the developer disappeared.
The orchard remained mine, as did the farmhouse. The decisions about both would remain mine as long as I was capable of making them.
