My father took my mother’s entire salary for 43 years. When she finally demanded her money back, he placed a folder on the table and said, “When you open it, you will never look at me the same way again.”

“Never go near that box again,” he said sharply.

At that moment, I became completely convinced that he was hiding something. Maybe he had spent my mother’s money over the years. Maybe he had debts. Or perhaps he was living a secret double life.

Everything changed on my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary.
