My family refused to pick me up from the airport after I buried my husband overseas — the next evening, they saw something on the news they never expected

He said nothing.

So I did.

“Your father paid off Wesley’s debt.”

Corinne stared at her brother.

“You told us you handled that yourself.”

Wesley’s face burned.

I continued.

“Edmund never asked for repayment. He never embarrassed you. He never mentioned it again because he said a child should still be able to come to his father when he is ashamed.”

My voice broke.

“And what did you do when that father died?”

Nobody moved.

“You skipped his funeral.”

Corinne looked down.

“You left me alone at an airport.”

My eyes moved toward the labels.

“And before I even got home, you started putting your names on his things.”

Wesley finally whispered, “We didn’t know you needed us that badly.”

I almost laughed.

“I needed a ride.”

Silence.

“That was all.”

No one had an answer.

I peeled the label from Edmund’s chair.

Then the one from my jewelry cabinet.
