But there was one more surprise.
A few days later, the clinic contacted us again.
They had received additional information from Daniel’s family. His nephew, the child who had been diagnosed twenty years earlier, was now an adult.
And he wanted to meet us.
His name was Adam.
When we finally met him, I was expecting a sad, frightened young man.
Instead, a smiling 20-year-old walked into the room.
“Hi,” he said. “I heard I’m going to have two little cousins.”
Emily started crying again.
Adam sat beside us.
“I know my condition frightened you. But I want you to understand something. My life has been different, but it is still my life. I study, I laugh, I have dreams, and I have people who love me.”
He paused.
“Please don’t let fear decide what kind of future your children deserve.”
Those words stayed with me forever.
Three months later, Emily gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.
