Part 2: The List My Son Wrote to Earn His Place
After learning that Grant had secretly arranged for Eli to leave, I asked my husband to hold Nora while I took our son upstairs. Eli walked carefully ahead of me, repeatedly looking back whenever I approached another step because he knew I was still recovering from surgery.
His bedroom appeared familiar at first, with his baseball glove hanging from the bedpost and an unfinished Lego spaceship resting on his desk. However, several books were missing from the shelves, and a cardboard box filled with his belongings sat beside the closet.
“What’s in that box, sweetheart?”
“Things I’m taking to Aunt Ruth’s. Grandma started packing, and I finished the rest.”
I lowered myself onto his bed and asked him to explain everything he had heard. Eli nervously twisted his shirt, looking toward the doorway before admitting that he had overheard Grant and Marilyn talking while I was upstairs resting with the twins.
