Part 5: The Son Who Never Needed Money to Belong
The following morning, I sat across from Grant and Marilyn with our financial records and a carefully prepared plan. I explained that the hospital had offered payment arrangements, my manager was considering part-time remote work, and Nina could occasionally help while we searched for affordable childcare.
Grant studied the figures and pointed out that our budget still had gaps. I acknowledged the difficulties but reminded him that every alternative deserved consideration before we separated our nine-year-old son from his family.
Marilyn insisted that Ruth could provide Eli with a comfortable home. When I asked whether she would suggest sending either twin away under similar circumstances, she immediately rejected the idea because they were Grant’s biological children.
“That’s exactly the problem, Marilyn. You see Ben and Nora as his children, but you treat Eli as someone we can send away whenever life becomes difficult.”
