My 9-year-old son placed $146 of his birthday savings on the kitchen table and quietly asked if he could stay for just one more month. My husband and mother-in-law immediately went silent. I had never agreed to send him anywhere, so I asked what he meant. Then my son revealed what his father had told him, and suddenly everything changed…

That evening, I reviewed our finances and discovered we had only $2,180 in savings against $4,760 in hospital bills. Grant’s reduced working hours and my unpaid leave had created serious problems, but I began searching for alternatives instead of accepting his plan.

The hospital offered to consider financial assistance and arrange monthly payments. My manager discussed temporary part-time remote work, while my friend Nina offered occasional help with laundry and the babies.

When I presented these possibilities, Grant argued that none would completely resolve our financial difficulties. He warned that we could eventually lose the house if our situation continued deteriorating.

Neither of us realized Eli had overheard the conversation. Later that evening, I found him upstairs beside a fully packed suitcase, his baseball glove resting on top.

“I think I should go to Aunt Ruth’s tomorrow, Mom. I heard Dad say we might lose the house, and I don’t want Ben and Nora to lose their home because of me.”
