I explained that I had learned about the plan only that morning. Ruth became quiet, then admitted that Grant had asked her to prepare for Eli to remain with her throughout the coming school year.
The revelation left me stunned because my husband had described the move as temporary. He had also assured Ruth that Eli was excited about living with her, even though our son had offered his birthday savings to avoid leaving.
“I would never have agreed to this if I’d known you weren’t involved. Eli is always welcome to visit, but I’m not taking him away from his mother.”
I thanked Ruth and ended the call, grateful that she understood the seriousness of the situation. When I opened our bedroom door, Grant was waiting in the hallway.
He initially insisted that nothing had been finalized. However, when I confronted him about the school transfer, packed belongings, and Saturday pickup, he finally admitted why he had kept everything secret.
