My 9-year-old son placed $146 of his birthday savings on the kitchen table and quietly asked if he could stay for just one more month. My husband and mother-in-law immediately went silent. I had never agreed to send him anywhere, so I asked what he meant. Then my son revealed what his father had told him, and suddenly everything changed…

“I only contacted the school to find out what the transfer process would involve. We weren’t sure how long Eli might need to stay with Ruth.”

“A school transfer? You told me this was supposed to be a summer visit!”

Grant insisted that he had merely been exploring possibilities, but his explanation revealed that the arrangement could extend into the next school year. He had already begun preparing for a future in which Eli no longer lived with us.

Marilyn entered the kitchen carrying Nora and defended her son’s decisions. When I confronted her about telling Eli he wasn’t our real child, she claimed she had only been discussing the difference between biological and adopted children.

“He was never supposed to overhear that conversation, Lauren. You’re twisting everything we said.”

“The problem isn’t that he overheard you. The problem is that you believe his adoption makes him easier to send away.”
