I returned to the suite feeling numb.
Housekeeping had found something on the floor.
A folded note.
I recognized Evelyn’s handwriting immediately.
My mother-in-law knew I had grown up without parents and had no close family waiting to rescue me.
Her message was short.
“Let’s see who comes for you now.”
I read it twice.
This had not been a spontaneous decision after an argument.
Julian and Evelyn had planned their departure.
They had taken Maya, my phone, and my passport before sunrise.
Then the room phone rang.
The receptionist was calling again.
“Mrs. Vance, I reviewed your airline reservation.”
I sat on the edge of the bed.
“So I missed the flight?”
“No, ma’am.”
Her voice softened.
“Your return ticket was canceled yesterday afternoon.”
My stomach dropped.
“Canceled?”
“Yes.”
That changed everything.
Missing a flight could happen by accident.
Leaving after a fight could be impulsive.
