I pulled out a chair for my daughter.
“Then she can learn them while sitting down.”
Nobody spoke during dinner.
But I noticed something else. Sofia barely touched her food, and whenever Vanessa moved her hand, my daughter flinched.
I had spent years working long-distance routes to provide a comfortable life for my family. I believed my wife was taking care of our daughter while I was away.
That night, I began to wonder what had really been happening inside my home.
Part 2: The Laundry Room
Later that evening, I went looking for Sofia.
Her bedroom was empty.
I checked the living room, the bathroom, and the backyard.
Finally, I heard a faint sound coming from the laundry room.
When I opened the door, I found my daughter kneeling beside a plastic basin, washing clothes by hand.
The room was dark except for the light coming from the hallway.
“Sofia?”
She turned so quickly that she nearly dropped a shirt.
