Uncategorized A new neighbor filed a complaint with the county about my 79-year-old father’s vegetable garden, calling it an eyesore. A county inspector gave Dad thirty days to get rid of it. Dad didn’t protest or argue. Instead, he shook the inspector’s hand and asked him for one small favor. “Come back at six on Saturday morning.” The official notice showed up on a Tuesday. Dad was sitting at the kitchen table, reading it through his glasses, which had slipped halfway down his nose. “Unmaintained agricultural use within a residential zone.” That was the county’s official description of his garden. It occupied roughly half an acre of land. Nine rows of green beans. Almost three hundred tomato plants. Potatoes. Squash. Onions. Beets. There were more vegetables growing there than any one elderly man could ever hope to eat. Dad lived by himself. And he ate about as much as a sparrow. A few years earlier, I had asked him why he kept planting so many green beans. “Who are all these vegetables for?” I asked. Dad merely shrugged. “People.” That was all he said. The complaint had been filed by our new neighbor, **Trent**. He had built a big gray house on the former **Wallace** property the previous spring. His back deck looked directly over Dad’s fence. On most mornings, I could spot him standing out there with a cup of coffee, gazing down at the rows of corn and vegetables. He never looked particularly happy about what he saw. The county inspector showed up on Thursday. He was young, courteous, and carrying a clipboard. “Mr. **Mercer**, I’m sorry about this,” he explained. “When someone submits a complaint, we’re obligated to look into it.” Dad nodded. “How much time do I have?” “Thirty days.” I was prepared to fight the decision. I had already written down the name of an attorney on the back of an envelope in my purse. I was also about ten seconds away from crossing the property line and telling Trent exactly what I thought about his complaint. Dad did neither of those things. He simply extended his hand toward the inspector. The young man shook it. “Would you do me one favor before you make your final decision?” Dad asked. “If the rules allow it.” “Come back on Saturday.” The inspector paused, waiting for him to explain. “At six in the morning.” He glanced over at me. I shrugged. I had absolutely no idea what Dad had in mind, either. Every Friday since Mom passed away, Dad’s pickup truck had been gone before sunrise. I had always assumed he was having trouble sleeping and going for a drive. I had never asked him about it. Saturday morning came with a chill in the air and a thick blanket of fog. Five minutes before six, the county inspector pulled over and parked along the road. Trent was already out on his brand-new deck, dressed in a robe and holding a mug. Dad was in the garden with his old bucket in hand. To him, it was simply another ordinary morning. Then, right at six o’clock, headlights emerged from the fog. A pickup truck drove down the road. Then a second one appeared. Next came a car. Four more vehicles followed close behind. One after another, they pulled over and parked along the ditch. Doors swung open. Men and women stepped out, carrying empty cardboard boxes, grocery bags, and plastic buckets. Nobody needed to tell them where to go. Nobody stopped to ask for directions. They simply made their way toward Dad’s garden. The inspector lowered his clipboard. His pen stopped moving. Another truck pulled up. Then yet another. Some people went straight to the rows of beans. Others headed toward the tomato plants. Dad gave each person a nod as they walked past him. He greeted them as though he had been waiting for every single one of them to arrive. Then the last vehicle appeared through the fog. A silver minivan.Full story continues in the first comment.
