“Iris,” I repeated, testing the sound of it out loud for the first time attached to an actual, living daughter instead of an idea we’d been almost too afraid to fully commit to. “I love it too.”
We spent the rest of that early morning slowly settling into the reality of her, Desmond gradually relaxing further with every passing hour, though I noticed him glancing at that small mark on her shoulder more than once, working through something I don’t think fully resolved itself in a single night.

Three days after we brought Iris home, Desmond called his mother, something he did rarely enough that I could count the calls over the past twelve years on one hand.
