Then Martin, my attorney, called.
At his office, he showed me five reports connected to the families who had previously considered adopting Lily.
Every family had received threats.
One had found photographs of their home in an envelope. Another had been warned that their children would suffer if they adopted Lily. Others reported being followed or intimidated.
I was horrified.
“Who would do something like this?”
Martin turned to another document.
“Victor. Lily’s biological uncle.”
After Lily’s parents died, Victor had applied to care for her. The agency rejected him after discovering violent incidents and unsafe conditions in his home.
But he refused to accept the decision.
Instead, he had apparently tried to frighten away anyone who might adopt her.

The adoption records I’d received never mentioned these threats.
“Those families didn’t reject Lily,” I whispered.
