My fourteen-year-old daughter, Sienna, is not a bad girl.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure, she gets moody like any teenager, but she’s never been one of those who skipped classes.fir<\/span><\/p>\n

Not even a single hour.<\/span><\/p>\n

So when the school called on Thursday afternoon, I answered immediately, hoping it was something about a group project or some permit she had forgotten to turn in.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This is Mrs. Carter, Sienna’s teacher,” said the voice on the other end of the line. “I wanted to get in touch with you. Sienna hasn’t been to school all week.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The statement seemed completely impossible compared to everything I knew about my own daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

“That can’t be right,” I said. “She leaves the house every morning. I see her walk out the door myself.”<\/span><\/p>\n

There was a brief pause on the other side.<\/span><\/p>\n

“No,” Mrs. Carter replied gently. “He hasn’t attended any classes since Monday. I wanted to speak with you before this became a bigger problem with the attendance office.”<\/span><\/p>\n

I felt like my stomach was going straight to the kitchen floor.<\/span><\/p>\n

That afternoon, when Sienna returned home at her usual time, she behaved completely normally.<\/span><\/p>\n

He complained about a history assignment.<\/span><\/p>\n

He asked what was for dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n

She rolled her eyes twice during a completely different conversation about dirty laundry.<\/span><\/p>\n
