June rested against my shoulder with one cheek damp from where I had wiped the gravy away. Neither of them spoke as we walked down the long gravel drive, past the parked luxury cars, past the valets pretending not to stare, past the white roses Beverly had ordered because she said they made the family look refined.<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the drive, my government-issued black sedan sat beneath an oak tree.<\/p>\n<p>Warren hated that car.<\/p>\n<p>He called it ugly. Practical. Embarrassing.<\/p>\n<p>He had no idea how many times that plain black sedan had carried me into rooms where men with more power than he could imagine stood when I entered.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I buckled June into her seat. Sadie climbed in beside her, still silent. When I got behind the wheel, my phone began vibrating.<\/p>\n<p>Warren.<\/p>\n<p>Then Warren again.<\/p>\n<p>Then Beverly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-4\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then Warren.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the phone face down and pulled away from the estate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-5\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Only when we reached the main road did Sadie finally whisper, \u201cMommy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her in the rearview mirror. \u201cYes, sweetheart?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAre we not real family because we\u2019re girls?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands tightened around the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>There are questions children should never have to ask.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to tell her that Beverly was cruel. That Warren was weak. That the whole polished crowd on that lawn had mistaken money for dignity and silence for permission.<\/p>\n<p>But Sadie was seven.<\/p>\n<p>June was five.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t need a speech.<\/p>\n<p>They needed certainty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are my family,\u201d I said. \u201cYou and your sister are the most real thing in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>June rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand. \u201cBut Grandma took our food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause some people think love is something they get to measure out. Like slices of cake. Like seats at a table.\u201d I looked at them again. \u201cBut they are wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadie\u2019s chin trembled. \u201cDaddy didn\u2019t help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, the road blurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cHe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I drove to a small restaurant in Arlington with red booths, laminated menus, and no string quartet by the fountain. The hostess smiled at my daughters as if they were simply hungry children and not casualties of a family performance.<\/p>\n<p>I ordered pancakes, chicken soup, grilled cheese, fries, chocolate milk, and two slices of strawberry pie. June\u2019s dress still had a faint stain near the hem. Sadie kept touching her cheek, as if she could still feel the gravy there.<\/p>\n<p>When the food came, they stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this is for us?\u201d June asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie picked up a fry. \u201cCan we eat until we\u2019re full?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed the ache in my throat. \u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While they ate, I stepped three feet away, close enough to see them, far enough for them not to hear everything.<\/p>\n<p>Then I made three calls.<\/p>\n<p>The first was to my father.<\/p>\n<p>He answered on the second ring. \u201cAllison?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad,\u201d I said. \u201cIt\u2019s time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause. My father, General Thomas Hale, retired, never asked unnecessary questions.
