Daniel took a deep breath.
“Twenty years ago, my younger sister gave birth to a little boy. He was diagnosed with a rare inherited genetic disorder. At the time, doctors told our family that both parents had to carry a specific mutation for the child to develop the condition.”
I looked at Emily.
Neither of us dared to speak.
Daniel continued.
“My parents were devastated. They had never known about the mutation. Later, genetic testing revealed that it had been passed down through our family for generations.”
“Then why did you become a sperm donor?” Emily asked angrily. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
His voice broke.
“Because I was tested years ago. I was told I carried only one copy of the mutation, and that I was healthy. I honestly believed that being a carrier wasn’t something that would put a child at risk.”
