PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE $80,000 – News

“Mom?”

The moment I heard that voice, my entire body froze.

For ten years, I had imagined that sound in my head.

I imagined Marcus opening the door of my old house on Christmas morning.

I imagined him walking in with a suitcase, laughing, saying he had surprised me.

I imagined holding him again and feeling like the missing years had never happened.

But I never imagined hearing his voice inside a house where he was supposed to be living… while I stood upstairs surrounded by boxes of money I didn’t understand.

My fingers tightened around the edge of the door.

“Marcus?” I whispered.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then his footsteps stopped.

“Mom…”

His voice cracked.

Not with anger.

Not with surprise.

With fear.

I slowly stepped out of the room.

And when I saw him standing at the bottom of the stairs, I barely recognized my own son.

The last time I saw Marcus, he was twenty-one years old.

A young man with dark hair, bright eyes, and a smile that made everyone believe he could accomplish anything.

The man standing in front of me looked older than his age.

His shoulders were heavier.

His face was thinner.

There were deep lines around his eyes that hadn’t been there before.

But the thing that broke my heart the most was not how much he had changed.

It was the look on his face.

He looked like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.

“Why are you here?” he asked quietly.

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to ask him why he disappeared.

Why he never came home.

Why he let me spend ten years wondering if my only child was happy or suffering.

But when I looked at him, all I could say was:

“I missed you.”

That was it.

After ten years of waiting, after ten years of unanswered questions, those were the only words that came out.

His face changed.

For a moment, the cold expression disappeared.

He looked like the little boy who used to run into my bedroom after nightmares.

He walked toward me slowly.

And then, without saying anything, he hugged me.

I felt his body shaking.

My son was crying.

Not quietly.

Not pretending to be strong.

He was crying like someone who had finally reached the end of something painful.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” he whispered.

“I’m so sorry.”

I held him tighter.

“I thought you were happy.”

He didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

That night, we sat at the dining table.

The same kind of table I had imagined him sitting at every Christmas.

Except this time, there was no holiday food.

No laughter.

No celebration.

Just two people trying to understand ten years of silence.

Marcus made tea.

I watched him move around the kitchen.

Everything about him felt familiar.

The way he held the cup.

The way he checked if I had enough sugar.

The little habits I remembered from when he was young.

But there was something different.

A sadness he carried that I had never seen before.

Finally, I asked the question that had been sitting in my heart for years.

“Why didn’t you come home?”

He looked down.

“I wanted to.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Because I was ashamed.”

I frowned.

“Ashamed of what?”

He looked toward the upstairs hallway.

Toward the room full of money.

“Everything.”

I didn’t understand.

“Marcus, you sent me $80,000 every Christmas. You built this beautiful house. You told me you were doing well.”

He gave a bitter smile.

“I lied.”

The word hurt more than I expected.

Not because he had lied.

Because I realized how much pain must have been hidden behind that lie.

“What happened after you moved here?”

Marcus leaned back in his chair.

“Do you remember when I told you Li Mei was older than me?”

I nodded.

“I remember.”

“I knew you were worried.”

I looked away.

Because I was.

I had been afraid he was making a mistake.

I was afraid he was rushing into something he didn’t understand.

“I thought you didn’t accept her because of her age,” he continued.

I opened my mouth to respond.

But he shook his head.

“I was wrong.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?”

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Li Mei wasn’t the problem.”

The room became completely silent.

“Then what was?”

He looked at me.

“The money.”

When Marcus first arrived in China, he said, he believed he had finally found his future.

Li Mei had connections.

She introduced him to business opportunities.

She told him he could build something bigger than anything he could do back home.

At first, everything seemed perfect.

He rented a beautiful apartment.

He traveled.

He sent me photos.

In every picture, he smiled.

But what I didn’t know was that those pictures were carefully chosen.

Behind the smiles were long nights.

Pressure.

Arguments.

And a business relationship that slowly turned into something he couldn’t escape.

“Li Mei had a lot of influence,” Marcus said.

“She knew powerful people. She knew how to make things happen.”

“Then why didn’t you leave?”

He looked at me.

“Because I owed her.”

My heart sank.

“Owed her?”

He nodded.

“When I first moved there, she invested money into my company. I thought it was a partnership.”

He paused.

“It wasn’t.”

I felt a chill.

“What happened?”

Marcus rubbed his hands together.

“After the company started making money, she changed.”

He explained that Li Mei began controlling every decision.

Every contract.

Every account.

Every person he worked with.

At first, he believed it was normal.

A successful business required sacrifices.

But slowly, he realized he was no longer building his own life.

He was living inside someone else’s plan.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because you would have come for me.”

I didn’t deny it.

I would have.

I would have crossed oceans.

I would have fought anyone.

“You were my son.”

“I know.”

His voice became softer.

“And that’s why I couldn’t tell you.”

Then came the question I had been avoiding.

“Where is Li Mei?”

Marcus looked away.

“She left.”

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

I stared at him.

“Eight years?”

He nodded.

“She disappeared after a legal battle involving the company.”

I looked around the house.

The empty rooms.

The missing photographs.

The untouched bedroom.

“That’s why there is no sign of her.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you keep sending me money?”

This time, Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

He walked upstairs.

I followed him.

He opened the door to the room filled with boxes.

“I need you to understand something.”

He picked up one of the boxes.

Inside were stacks of documents.

Not just money.

Papers.

Contracts.

Letters.

“What is all this?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Everything I saved.”

I was confused.

“The $80,000…”

“It wasn’t a gift.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

He sighed.

“Mom, I didn’t send you that money because I was rich.”

He looked around the room.

“I sent it because I wanted you to have something safe.”

I didn’t understand.

“What are you saying?”

He opened one of the documents.

Then he placed it in front of me.

It was a bank statement.

My eyes moved across the page.

And then I saw a name.

Not Marcus.

Not Li Mei.

A company I had never heard of.

“What is this?”

Marcus sat down.

“After Li Mei left, I discovered something.”

“What?”

“She had been hiding money from me.”

I looked at him.

“How much?”

He swallowed.

“More than twenty million dollars.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Twenty million?”

He nodded.

“She used my name. My company. My work.”

“Then why are you living here like this?”

His answer shocked me.

“Because I was trying to find out the truth.”

For the next hour, Marcus told me everything.

After Li Mei disappeared, he could have fought for everything.

He could have gone after the money.

He could have exposed her.

But instead, he found something that changed his entire perspective.

“She wasn’t the only person involved.”

My heart tightened.

“What do you mean?”

Marcus looked toward the window.

“There were other people behind her.”

“Who?”

He hesitated.

Then he reached into a drawer.

He pulled out an old envelope.

My name was written on it.

My hands trembled.

“Mom…”

“What is this?”

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“This is why I couldn’t come home.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

One I had never seen before.

It showed Marcus.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was Li Mei.

And beside them…

was another person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone from my past.

Someone I thought had disappeared forever.

My heart began pounding.

Because suddenly, after ten years of believing my son abandoned me…

I realized something much worse.

Maybe he had been protecting me.

I looked at Marcus.
