When I eventually spoke with my husband about returning to work, he was surprised. He had assumed we were still considering whether I would remain home longer. I calmly explained that I had made my decision. I wanted to continue my career while finding a childcare arrangement that worked for our family. For the first time in a long while, I realized how important it was to make decisions because they were right for me, rather than because I was afraid someone else might be disappointed.

Both families were present, and I explained that I had recently learned things that had changed how I viewed our relationship. I didn’t share every private detail. I simply said that trust had been damaged and that we needed to acknowledge the situation honestly.
