4. Substance Alterations
Sudden shifts in routine, such as drinking beverages containing caffeine late in the day, consuming alcohol before bed, or stopping specific medications abruptly, can severely fragment rest quality.
How to Break Free During an Episode
If you find yourself awake but unable to move, panicking will only prolong the experience and intensify any accompanying hallucinations. Instead, try using these focused techniques to gently wake your body up.
-
Focus on Small Muscle Groups: Do not try to sit up or thrash around violently. Instead, focus all your energy on moving a single toe, wiggling a finger, or blinking your eyes repeatedly. Small movements break the neurological lock faster.
-
Control Your Breathing: Your involuntary breathing muscles are not paralyzed. Take slow, deep breaths. This signals your brain’s fight-or-flight center that you are safe, reducing panic and helping you transition fully into a waking state.
-
Reassure Yourself: Remind yourself mentally: “This is temporary. My body is just asleep. I am safe, and this will pass in a moment.”
-
Move Your Eyes: Look around the room deliberately. Shifting your gaze quickly from side to side can help signal to your brain that you are awake.
