My father took my mother’s entire salary for 43 years. When she finally demanded her money back, he placed a folder on the table and said, “When you open it, you will never look at me the same way again.”

“Margaret, this isn’t normal,” she said after my father left the room. “You work, but he controls your entire life.”

Currencies & Foreign Exchange

My mother simply whispered:

Patio, Lawn & Garden

“Nothing is as it seems.”

I became angry.

“Then what’s really going on? He takes your entire salary and doesn’t even tell you what he spends it on.”

My mother looked toward the closed bedroom door.

“One day, you’ll understand.”

Coats & Jackets

When I got married and moved away from home, I called my mother every week. Several times, I offered to help her open her own bank account, but she refused.

I began to think that she was simply afraid of my father.

The years passed. My father retired, but the strange habit continued. Every month, my mother placed the envelope containing her salary or pension in front of him. He would take it and lock it inside an old metal box.

No one knew what was inside.

Parenting

Once, I even tried to open it, but my father grabbed my hand.

“Never go near that box again,” he said sharply.

At that moment, I became completely convinced that he was hiding something. Maybe he had spent my mother’s money over the years. Maybe he had debts. Or perhaps he was living a secret double life.

Everything changed on my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary.

Our entire  family was gathered at their home. My daughter took a  photograph of them while they sat together on the sofa. As always, my father had a serious expression on his face, while my mother held onto his arm.

Pregnancy & Maternity

After the  photo was taken, my mother suddenly said:

“Robert, it’s time.”

The room fell completely silent.

My father looked at her for a long time, then slowly nodded.

“Are you sure?”

“Fifty years is long enough. Our children deserve to know the truth.”
